THE EXHIBITION

Invitation

Following the very successful Book Launch, an opportunity arose to hold an exhibition of some of the items in the Hegarty Collection.  Camden Fort Meagher invited us to use some of their exhibition space during the 2022 Summer season.

The fort situated near the mouth of Cork Harbour is steeped in history and was the scene of many incidents during the Irish War of Independence so it was a perfect location to exhibit The Hegarty Collection.

Exhibition

Thanks to the Volunteers and Cork County Council, The Hegarty Collection was given exhibition space and provided with beautiful old display cabinets.

The once derelict fort has been transformed by the dedicated “Rescue Camden” team of volunteers and it is now a fantastic addition to Cork Harbour.

Throughout the summer of 2022, the stories of siblings John Joe, Nan and Mamie and that of their friend and comrade Joe Murphy reached a new audience and was very well received by visitors from all over the globe.

Camden Fort Meagher

For almost 400 years the fort played a key role as a strong strategic position for the defence of Ireland, the west coast of England and Wales. 65% of the fort is located underground in a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers.

The fort is a prime location to watch ships passing through Cork Harbour, the second largest natural harbour in the world.
