Joe Murphy’s Story, Irish American News

In April 2026, Irish American News published an article by Jim Hegarty which tells Joe Murphy’s story.

Many readers may not have heard of Joe or be aware that he also died while on hunger strike in Cork Gaol. Joe died on the same day as fellow hunger striker, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney.

In Joe’s short life he achieved so much and his sacrifice for Irish Freedom should never be forgotten.

Joe Murphy was firm friends with his neighbours, the Hegarty family. John Joe, Nan and Mamie Hegarty were fellow volunteers and they felt his loss deeply.

John Joe was instrumental in organising a memorial plaque to be placed on Joe’s home in Pouladuff. He and so many others wanted to ensure that Joe would always be remembered.

We are honoured to share Joe Murphy’s story on our website and also to share the Irish American News article.
