The Irish American News invited Jim Hegarty to submit a series of articles based on the Hegarty Family and families connected to them. Beginning in March 2025, the series “HerStory & HiStory” shares insights the Hegarty family, the political turmoil and social unrest.

Like so many families, The Hegartys never discussed the Irish War of Independence and the Civil War that followed. So many stories have been lost. But, from little snippets of information, their story is being uncovered and shared for the first time.

Following the publication of “The Hegartys of The Laurels” and the screenings of the Film, interest in those troubled times has been building. Many families have been in contact as they have discovered connections to the Hegartys and are building their own family archive.
